Shaping Up For The Better

Hello everyone! So recently I've had the privilege to be in a program for five weeks called SISTAS. The basics of this program is better the community we currently live in and also talk about and be aware of AIDS/HIV and STIs. SISTAS in under a bigger umbrella called GBAPP, which stands for Greater Bridgeport Area Prevention Program. It's a non-profit organization and has been serving the Greater Bridgeport community for over 30 years.

GBAPP's mission is to serve the Greater Bridgeport community through education, collaboration, and intervention by empowering individuals to make informed healthy decisions.

GBAPP works to:

  • reduce teen pregnancy
  • reduce the spread of HIV
  • increase access to care and supportive services
  • enhance positive relationships
  • promote personal responsibility

GBAPP's services include:

  • classroom human sexuality & risk reduction education
  • HIV counseling & testing
  • life skills
  • maternity housing for teens
  • medical case management
  • mentoring
  • peer-to-peer outreach
  • teen fatherhood services
Every Wednesday when the percipients in SISTAS met up, we basically talked about our female bodies, touched on HIV/AIDS, personal sexual experiences, and respecting each other. The setting was very intimate being that it was about 12 of us. If I could I would most definitely do it again. Yes, I know I am not from Bridgeport, but being that 8 out of the 12 months in a year I am in Bridgeport cause of school i want to see my community shape up into a better place.
